Information on Niue

The tropical island of Niue is situated 19?south of the Equator. It’s 2,200 km's northeast of New Zealand, 386 km's east of Tonga and 900 km's west of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

This position puts it eleven hours behind Greenwich Mean Time and twenty-three hours behind New Zealand standard time.

It is one of the worlds largest emerged coral atolls, a saucer shaped island made from the basement of an isolated volcanic cone, 64 km's in circumference with an area of 269 sq. km's.

It rises no more than 69 m above sea level, and was exposed as a result of dropping sea levels in the last million years. It is protected from the direct effects of the sea by a terraced limestone reef with living coral just beneath sea level.

Most of the coast rises 20 - 30 m straight out of the sea, so it boasts initimate coves rather than the beach coastline typical of islands.

Size
Niue is much larger than the entire Cook’s group of fifteen islands put together, yet we only have less than one tenth of their population. There really are no crowds at all. We are small, but not tiny, since at 269 sq. kms of land area, Niue is over four times the size of Rarotonga – which covers 67.2 sq. km.

The entire population of about 1500 people live in only 14 widely dispersed villages. The rest of the island comprises virgin rainforest and farmland. It is not recommended, but there's a lot of space to get really lost, if you want to.

Currency
Niue uses the New Zealand dollar ($NZ) and a 12.5% Niue Consumption Tax (NCT) also applies.

Electricity
240 volts, 10amp, 3 pin plug, same as New Zealand and Australia.

Language
Niueans are multi-lingual, fluent in both Niuean and English, so it’s unlikely a visitor would find anyone who doesn’t speak English.

Visa’s & Immigration
Passports are essential, and genuine tourists are given a free 30-day tourist visa upon arrival provided you have an onward ticket. Extensions are available upon application to the Immigration Office before arrival. Contact  P O Box 67 Alofi, tel. +683 4349 fax 4336.

A universal NZ$30 departure fee is payable at the airport, but children under 12 are exempt.

Duty Free
The following Duty Free items can be imported into Niue by persons 18yrs and older without incurring duty:
  200 cigarettes or;
  227g of tobacco or;
  50 cigars:
  3 bottles of spirits not exceeding 3 Litres.
